As a German, I have never understood why there’s the need for registration at all. To my mind, there should not be any registration process, like it is here in Germany. Why not just send anybody – of course, that would mean something like a national register of addresses as we have here – who is legally allowed to vote a notification that enables them to turn up on election day with this note plus some form of identification – of course, here in Germany we have a mandatory identification card – and simply vote?
Talking of election day: why does that have to be a Tuesday? Even with early voting, that clearly discriminates against people who need to work. Again, and I hope I don’t sound too patronizing, I think our German system with having elections on Sundays is better.
